U.S. Sanctions on Iranian Oil Shipments

Date: Wednesday

The U.S. Department of Treasury has sanctioned over a dozen entities and vessels for their involvement in transporting Iranian crude oil and liquid petroleum gas to Syria and East Asia. This action is in connection with the Iran Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah.

Key Details:

  • Affected Entities:
    • Four ships linked to Syrian shipping magnate Abdul Jalil Mallah and his brother Luay al-Mallah.
    • Abdul Jalil Mallah was previously sanctioned in 2021.
    • Luay al-Mallah was newly designated under U.S. sanctions on Wednesday.

Statement from the Treasury:**

The Mallah brothers have allegedly continued using their shipping businesses to support Iran’s destabilizing activities and those of its proxies.
Acting Under Secretary Bradley T. Smith noted that Iran heavily relies on the illicit sale of oil and liquid petroleum gas by the Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah to fund terrorism and destabilization efforts.
