The U.S. Department of Treasury has sanctioned over a dozen entities and vessels for their involvement in transporting Iranian crude oil and liquid petroleum gas to Syria and East Asia. This action is on behalf of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah.
Among the sanctioned vessels are four ships connected to Syrian shipping magnate Abdul Jalil Mallah, who had previously been sanctioned by the U.S. in 2021, along with his brother, Luay al-Mallah, who was also designated under U.S. sanctions on Wednesday.
The Treasury Department stated that the Mallah brothers have continued utilizing their shipping business to promote Iran’s harmful activities and support its proxies. Bradley T. Smith, the acting undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, emphasized that Iran heavily depends on the illicit sale of oil and liquid gas, funding its terrorist proxies and destabilizing activities.
