James Cameron Joins Stability AI Board
Stability AI announced that director James Cameron, known for Titanic and The Terminator, has joined its board.
The rise of generative AI has piqued Hollywood’s interest amidst soaring production costs. Following OpenAI’s launch of the text-to-video tool Sora in February, Hollywood executives have met with the company to explore the technology’s potential applications.
Cameron’s addition aligns with Stability AI’s mission to “transform visual media” by offering creators a comprehensive suite of AI tools, according to CEO Prem Akkaraju.
Based in London, Stability AI raised approximately $80 million in funding earlier this year and provides an image-generation tool competing with offerings from Google and OpenAI. The company secured a $101 million seed round led by Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners in 2022, achieving a $1 billion valuation.
In addition to image generation, Stability AI also utilizes Stable Video Diffusion, a text-to-video generation tool. Cameron expressed that the combination of generative AI and CGI could unveil unprecedented storytelling capabilities for artists.
However, the relationship between Hollywood and AI has been contentious, highlighted by the 2023 strikes by writers and actors seeking protections against the unregulated employment of AI in creative processes.
Cameron joins other newly appointed members on Stability AI’s board, including former Facebook President Sean Parker, who serves as the company’s executive chairman.
