SpaceX’s Mars Mission Plans

(Reuters) – SpaceX plans to launch about five uncrewed Starship missions to Mars in the next two years, according to CEO Elon Musk, who shared this on social media platform X.

Earlier this month, Musk indicated that the first Starships to Mars would launch in two years “when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens.”

The timeline for the first crewed mission will depend on the success of the uncrewed flights. If the uncrewed missions land safely, crewed missions could launch in four years. However, if challenges arise, this may be postponed by another two years, Musk explained.

Musk, often known for varying timelines regarding Starship’s readiness, had previously stated that the first uncrewed Starship landing on Mars could occur within five years, with the first human landing within seven years.

In June, a Starship rocket successfully completed a full test mission around the globe, surviving a fiery, hypersonic return from space and achieving a breakthrough landing demonstration in the Indian Ocean on its fourth attempt.

Musk aims for Starship to be a large, multipurpose spacecraft designed for sending people and cargo to the Moon this decade, and ultimately for missions to Mars.

Earlier this year, NASA delayed its Artemis 3 mission, which would mark the first crewed moon landing in half a century using SpaceX’s Starship, now scheduled for September 2026 instead of late 2025.

Additionally, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa canceled a private mission around the Moon that was planned to use SpaceX’s Starship, citing uncertainties in the rocket’s development schedule.
