SEC Approves Options Trading for BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved the listing and trading of options for BlackRock (NYSE: BLK)’s spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund on Nasdaq.
Options Trading
Options trading for BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust has been approved with the ticker symbol IBIT, as announced by the regulator in a notice on Friday.
Index options are listed derivatives that provide a quick and inexpensive way to amplify exposure to bitcoin, offering institutional investors and traders an alternative method to hedge their exposure to this leading cryptocurrency.
Impact on Cryptocurrency
The approval for options linked to a bitcoin ETF marks a significant advancement for cryptocurrency, which was once viewed as a nascent asset class. Since the launch of bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, cryptocurrency has been inching closer to mainstream acceptance.
Understanding Options
Options grant holders the right to buy or sell an asset, like a stock or exchange-traded product, at a predetermined price by a specific date.
Exchanges began applying for options linked to the spot bitcoin ETF once it was apparent that the SEC would approve the underlying ETFs in January. The SEC also oversees the technical rule changes exchanges must implement to list options and stated that existing surveillance procedures will apply to IBIT options.
