Argentinian President Javier Milei on Hosting Devconnect
Argentinian President Javier Milei expressed that it would be “an honor” for Argentina to host the next edition of Devconnect, an event promoting the Ethereum ecosystem.
Milei’s statement followed Vitalik Buterin’s praise of Argentina’s Ethereum community, highlighting the genuine energy and determination of builders in the country.
Buterin remarked that the recent LIBRA memecoin scandal should not deter belief in crypto but rather encourage education about it.
He stated:
> “I continue to be very optimistic about Argentina and Latam’s contributions and role in the space.”
In another post on X, Buterin suggested hosting the next Devconnect in Argentina, considering it a great opportunity to demonstrate effective crypto usage to the local community. He tagged Milei in the post.
Milei replied on social media:
> “THANK YOU VERY MUCH VITALIK BUTERIN FOR YOUR WORDS ABOUT ARGENTINE TALENT!!! It would be an honor for Argentina to host Devconnect. I agree that it would be a great opportunity for our country.”
According to Chainalysis’ “2024 Geography of Crypto Report,” Argentina ranks 15th in the crypto adoption index and leads Latin America in crypto value received, amounting to approximately $91.1 billion from 2023 to 2024.
LIBRA Controversy
The exchange between Milei and Buterin occurs amid significant controversy surrounding the LIBRA memecoin. On February 14, Milei endorsed LIBRA as a method to fund Argentinian ventures.
The token reached a valuation of $4.5 billion before plummeting 95% over a single weekend. A report by Nansen indicated that 86% of traders lost $251 million, and 70% of wallets trading the token suffered losses.
Hayden Davis, a prominent figure behind LIBRA, stated in an interview that Milei had no financial interest in the token post-scandal, claiming he influenced the President by compensating Milei’s sister.
Notably, Milei asserted that he did not intend to promote the token, sharing it on social media merely as a gesture of goodwill towards the industry.
