Federal Reserve's Interest Rate Outlook

Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams on Monday signaled support for more interest rate cuts as monetary policy remains restrictive.

"I expect it will be appropriate to continue to move to a more neutral policy setting over time," Williams stated in remarks to the Queens Chamber of Commerce in New York.

Further rate cuts are anticipated as the Fed initiated its rate cycle in September, aiming for a neutral level of rates—one that neither boosts nor hinders economic growth.

While Williams did not confirm support for a December rate cut, he emphasized a data-driven approach to monetary policy, recognizing that "the outlook remains highly uncertain."

Amid concerns about the timing of rate cuts while the economy isn’t in distress, Williams highlighted rapid supply growth, fueled by labor force and productivity increases, which outpaces demand, necessitating the Fed's intervention for balance.

"And now that we’ve achieved that balance, our job now is to ensure the risks remain in balance," he concluded.
