Hester Peirce Advocates for Positive Regulatory Change in Crypto

Hester Peirce, a member of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stated that a more positive era in cryptocurrency regulations has begun and called for “rapid progress.”

Peirce, known as the “Cryptocurrency Mom,” expressed regret during a speech at the Coin Center dinner about the agency’s previous skeptical attitude toward cryptocurrency.

> “I am sorry that I couldn’t convince my colleagues to give you a chance during my time at the SEC,” Peirce said, arguing that regulatory uncertainty has given way to clarity. “Let’s use this time to build structures that will enhance safety, prosperity, and happiness,” she urged.

The SEC has taken several friendlier steps towards cryptocurrency over the past year, following the Trump administration’s ascension to power and the appointment of Paul Atkins as executive director. This includes the establishment of a Cryptocurrency Task Force led by Peirce, the dismissal of some lawsuits, and the launch of a new initiative called “Crypto Project” aimed at modernizing existing rules regulating digital assets.

Under former chairman Gary Gensler, the agency took a cautious approach to cryptocurrencies and sued several major companies. Gensler faced criticism for his view that most cryptocurrencies qualify as securities and his “regulation by enforcement” approach. Peirce was one of the frequent critics of this approach at that time.
