WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Elon Musk’s reliance on young engineers with little government experience in his federal infrastructure takeover raises questions about qualifications. Here are three key figures:
GAVIN KLIGER
Gavin Kliger serves as “Special Advisor to the Director @ OPM” since January. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 2020 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, maintaining a 3.95 GPA. Kliger previously worked as a senior Software Engineer at AI startup Databrinks and Twitter in 2019.
Kliger’s essays on Substack often reflect his political views. One essay argues that Congressman Matt Gaetz was unjustly forced out of office, likening it to Trump’s experiences with the establishment. Another discusses potential Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth as a challenge to entrenched Pentagon interests. His third essay, only available to subscribers, is titled “Why DOGE” with a subtitle about sacrificing a lucrative job to ‘save America.’ Kliger reposted a Musk tweet about DOGE, echoing the sentiment expressed by Musk.
U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project.
LUKE FARRITOR
Luke Farritor has experience from SpaceX, where he interned and contributed to software for rocket components. He is an award-winning Thiel Fellow who recently gained $100,000 for his work on deciphering an ancient Greek scroll. Farritor has accessed USAID and is listed as an “executive engineer” for the Department of Health and Human Services. His team reportedly requested access to critical Medicare and Medicaid systems. Farritor has not commented on recent inquiries.
EDWARD CORISTINE
Edward Coristine, a recent high school graduate, was enrolled at Northeastern University and worked at Neuralink for three months last summer. OPM records list him as an “expert.” He founded three tech companies from his home in Connecticut, valued at over $2.4 million, one of which, Tesla.Sexy LLC, focuses on scientific and technological services. Coristine has contributed to Neuralink’s code but has not responded to comments.
Conclusion
Musk’s team, comprised of relatively inexperienced young professionals, faces scrutiny over its impact on federal government operations and decision-making.
