Why Are So Many Crypto Games Shutting Down? Experts Weigh In

The Troubling Trend in Crypto Gaming

Crypto gaming has recently faced a worrying trend, with many projects shutting down or being abandoned after waves of hype, token sales, and chaos. Experts suggest this is not surprising given the challenges of game development, and they point to gaming tokens as a flawed system exerting excessive pressure on nascent projects.

While many titles once appeared promising, recent failures like Deadrop and Nyan Heroes highlight the volatility in the industry. Deadrop, led by streamer Dr. Disrespect, collapsed after his removal over allegations, while Nyan Heroes ran out of funds despite gaining traction.

Other titles such as Raini: The Lords of Light, MetalCore, Blast Royale, and The Walking Dead: Empires also face imminent closure, showcasing a troubling trend in crypto gaming.

John Linden, co-founder and CEO of Mythical Games, remarked that even in traditional gaming, 90% of games fail, and the Web3 side mirrors this trend, though with more public visibility. He noted that traditional games often fail before players invest, unlike many crypto games where players buy tokens and NFTs before a game is launched.

Refunds are rare in crypto gaming, as indicated by the struggles of Deadrop players seeking refunds through banking channels after the game went silent. The changing landscape of investment funding is a significant reason behind many games’ closures, as less capital is available compared to a few years ago when hype was rampant.

Developers, like Keith Kim from Nexpace, noted that a lack of focus on sustainable game fundamentals has caused further issues. Veteran game developer John Smedley criticized the disregard for traditional gamers, warning that alienating this audience limits potential growth.

Upcoming titles like Reaper Actual aim to bridge the gap by integrating traditional game mechanics with blockchain elements, allowing for wider accessibility. Similarly, Off the Grid allows for play on non-crypto platforms to attract a larger audience.

The production times of successful games contrast starkly with failed ones that rushed to issue tokens. Creators like Krypticrooks from Fractional Uprising shared experiences of immense pressure linked to token management, leading to project failures when funding dried up. Linden pointed out that sustaining a single-game token becomes increasingly difficult as demand fluctuates.

Conversely, Krypticrooks believes producing more tokens could benefit the community, though this approach has led to oversaturation. The launchpad Pump.fun, responsible for millions of new tokens, has been accused of harming the industry’s integrity and shortening investors’ attention spans.

The resulting chaos has left gaming tokens largely irrelevant in the market, with none remaining in the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap—a stark indication of the sector’s challenges.
