Google Under Federal Supervision
(Reuters) – The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has taken steps to put Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s Google under formal federal supervision, according to the Washington Post. This could present a new regulatory challenge for the Big Tech giant.
Google has fiercely resisted this idea amid months of secretive discussions, as reported on Thursday by two insiders.
Federal supervision status allows regulators access to a company’s internal records.
Both the CFPB and Alphabet declined to comment.
In addition to this potential supervision, Google is already facing government actions that could compel the company to divest parts of its business. Furthermore, there is a court order mandating the opening of its mobile app store to competition.
