U.S. Treasury Cyber Breach Update

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. cyber watchdog agency, CISA, stated on Monday that there was “no indication” the recent breach at the U.S. Treasury Department had impacted any other federal agency.

Last month, the U.S. Treasury reported that an unspecified number of computers had been compromised by Chinese hackers following a breach at contractor BeyondTrust, which provides cybersecurity services.

BeyondTrust mentioned that a limited number of clients were affected but has not provided further details.

> “As the forensic investigation is ongoing, BeyondTrust is unable to confirm the other customers who may or may not have been impacted,” the company stated in an email on Monday.

The Washington Post reported that the hackers targeted the U.S. Treasury office responsible for administering economic sanctions, particularly aiming to acquire information about Chinese entities that the U.S. government might consider designating for financial sanctions.

Republican lawmakers have called for a briefing regarding the breach, which is part of a continuing series of intrusions attributed to Beijing.

Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, previously characterized the hack reports as “irrational” and as smear attacks against China.
