Impact of Trump Administration on Global Cryptocurrency Regulation

President-elect Donald Trump's tenure could prompt other countries to either revamp their cryptocurrency regulatory frameworks or reinforce existing systems, according to Tom Duff Gordon, Coinbase's Vice President of International Policy. On Thursday at Emergence in Prague, Gordon highlighted the potential ripple effects on global crypto regulation.

Gordon stated, "I think Trump and what’s happened over there creates a lot of momentum." He suggested that Trump's actions could inspire other jurisdictions to advance their regulatory efforts or strengthen existing frameworks to attract investment and foster industry growth.

Gordon participated in the panel discussion "Navigating Crypto's Regulatory Seas: Compliance, Challenges, and Innovation" alongside Marina Markezic, executive director and co-founder of the nonprofit European Crypto Initiative, and Caner Sevinc, senior corporate counsel at Gemini. The 40-minute panel, moderated by Your Partners Chief Marketing Officer and Co-founding Partner Tim Reed, was held at The Block's Emergence conference in the Prague Congress Center.

Markezic noted, "It's also positive that the European Union is kinda 'waking up' that." Sevinc added that while the U.S. and Europe take different regulatory approaches on digital assets, their regulatory moves "could give the same comfort to other jurisdictions as well to go ahead and be pro-crypto."

Trump's crypto-focused agenda includes appointing former PayPal exec David O. Sacks as the White House's first-ever "Crypto Czar" to lead digital asset regulatory clarity and proposing to create a United States bitcoin reserve, as previously reported by The Block.
