The Open Network (TON) Experiences Second Outage

The Open Network (TON +7.97%), now back online, faced its second outage in two days due to heavy transaction loads from the DOGS memecoin.

“Block production issues began at 19:19 UTC,” TON reported on X. “The disruption appears to be due to heavy load attributed to DOGS token minting.”

Following the suspension, TON developers urged mainnet validators to update and restart their nodes to address the issue. By 1:30 a.m. UTC, the TON Community on Telegram announced that the network issue had been resolved.

This outage follows a prior incident on Tuesday that lasted over six hours, also caused by an “abnormal” increase in transactions from the DOGS memecoin linked to a recent airdrop event.

A user on X, “maverickqe,” claiming to be a strategic advisor to the TON Society, mentioned that validators lost consensus during the first outage as the network overload persisted longer than expected.

The DOGS memecoin, which is based on Telegram, has gained considerable attention as its developers aim to broaden the token’s utility within the Telegram ecosystem. The DOGS airdrop event commenced on Monday, with 81.5% of the limited supply of 550 billion tokens designated for community members. Last week, it was reported that six million verified users requested the airdrop.

In related news, Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov faced indictment from a French court on Wednesday after being previously detained by French police. His arrest was part of an investigation into allegations that Telegram provided cryptography tools and services that enabled money laundering, child pornography, and drug trafficking.

In the meantime, the network’s native token, Toncoin, saw a 4.64% increase in the past 24 hours, trading at $5.59 according to The Block’s Toncoin price page.
