SEGA’s Code of Joker: Evolutions Game
SEGA’s Code of Joker game series is making its way to the gaming-focused L1 blockchain Sui through a new title.
SEGA has licensed the intellectual property (IP) to third-party firm Jokers, Inc., which is currently developing the upcoming game.
About the Game
The new release, titled Code of Joker: Evolutions, will allow players to open card packs and collect cards on-chain as Sui NFTs.
Takashi “Gin” Mizouka, cofounder of Jokers Inc., expressed their aim to replicate “the physical feeling of opening a new card pack” in a statement.
Despite Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA’s iconic character, appearing in gameplay footage, it seems unlikely he will feature in Code of Joker: Evolutions.
Mysten Labs did not respond to inquiries regarding Sonic’s inclusion. In the past, SEGA co-COO Shuji Utsumi stated that the company wouldn’t license its most significant IPs for third-party blockchain games or create in-house crypto games.
SEGA’s Approach to Blockchain Gaming
Yet, SEGA is open to licensing some of its other game brands. For instance, two years ago, it authorized the Sangokushi Taisen brand for a third-party blockchain military card battle game developed by Double Jump Tokyo.
This game, titled Battle of Three Kingdoms, is set to launch on March 25, available for preorder on iOS and Android, with available English support. Notably, the app store descriptions avoid mentioning the game’s crypto elements, although it features NFT cards and the ability to stake the SGC token.
Code of Joker Online Information
Information on Code of Joker is scarce in English. Originally released in 2013, the last relevant YouTube video was found from six years ago, and the mobile version Code of Joker Pocket ended service in 2018.
While the character art appeals to anime fans, the IP hasn’t significantly reached U.S. audiences yet. Still, it could attract existing fans of the franchise.
The team has yet to confirm an English release for the game, which could impact its broader audience reach. However, it may not be a major concern; Asia has been a critical market for Web3.
In 2023, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 50% of global mobile gaming revenue, housing over 1.5 billion mobile gamers, according to Grandview Research.
Moreover, recent regulatory developments in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia position these nations for ongoing blockchain involvement, with companies like Sony’s Soneium collaborating with messaging app Line to develop mini-app games.
While details about Code of Joker: Evolutions remain limited, it is expected to launch by the end of summer for iOS, Android, and web platforms.
