Putin Agrees to US Ceasefire Proposals in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is open to US ceasefire proposals in Ukraine. However, he emphasized that any cessation of hostilities must tackle the underlying causes of the conflict.
Speaking at a press conference in the Kremlin with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin noted that numerous details still need to be negotiated. He expressed willingness to discuss the issue further with US President Donald Trump.

> “We agree with the proposals to stop hostilities. But we proceed from the fact that this cessation should lead to long-term peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Putin told reporters.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this conflict has represented the most significant tension between Moscow and the West since the Cold War. As of mid-2024, Russian forces control nearly a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, prompting increased calls for a diplomatic resolution.
On Wednesday, Trump indicated that the Kremlin hoped the United States would accept a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine has shown support for this plan, which Trump described as an effort to end the ongoing “bloodbath.”
Putin expressed gratitude for Trump’s efforts in seeking peace but insisted that more discussions are necessary. “The idea itself is correct and we absolutely support it,” he asserted, adding: “But there are issues we need to discuss. I think we need to talk to our American colleagues as well.”
Additionally, Putin mentioned the potential for a direct meeting with Trump to further deliberate on the ceasefire initiative. “We support the idea of ending this conflict peacefully,” he reiterated.
