Microsoft Flags Malware Threat to Crypto Wallets
Microsoft is making headlines after identifying a new security threat that could compromise 20 crypto wallets accessed through Google Chrome extensions. The malware, known as StilachiRAT, has remote access to PCs, allowing it to scan and steal users’ credentials, including digital wallets.
Vulnerable Wallets
Among the affected wallets are:
– Phantom
– Bitget
– Trust
– MetaMask
– BNB Chain
– OKX
– Sui
– Coinbase
Microsoft pointed out that while the malware does not have a large footprint, its stealth capabilities are concerning for users trying to protect their crypto assets.
User Advisories
The Solana-based Phantom Wallet has acknowledged the threat and advised users to take extra precautions. Recommended safety measures include:
– Using password managers
– Updating antivirus software
– Avoiding copy-pasting private keys
Crypto Losses
In related news, Bybit recently suffered a staggering $1.5 billion loss due to a security breach attributed to North Korean hackers, accounting for half of the reported lost funds in 2024, according to PeckShield, a Web3 security firm.
Data from PeckShield reveals that 70% of total lost funds over the past year were due to hacks, indicating that users are more vulnerable to security breaches than scams. Unfortunately, less than $500 million of the lost $3 billion in crypto funds for 2024 has been recovered, highlighting the necessity for early prevention and safety measures since recovery options can often be limited or ineffective.
