Apple’s New iPhone with A18 Chip

(Reuters) – Apple’s latest iPhone, featuring the A18 chip, is set to be unveiled at an event on Monday. This chip has been developed using SoftBank-owned Arm’s newest V9 chip design, according to the Financial Times.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will host its fall event on Sept. 9 at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. At this event, it is expected to unveil a series of new iPhones along with updates to other devices and apps.

In September last year, Apple signed a deal with Arm that extends beyond 2040, supporting Arm’s chip technology. Arm revealed in July that its V9 chip accounts for 50% of smartphone revenue.

Arm owns the intellectual property behind the computing architecture used in most of the world’s smartphones and licenses this technology to Apple and several others. Apple utilizes Arm’s technology in the design of its custom chips for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

A Long-standing Partnership

Apple and Arm share a long history; Apple was one of the initial companies that helped establish Arm in 1990. Their partnership began before the release of Apple’s Newton handheld computer in 1993, which utilized an Arm-based processor chip. Although the Newton was not successful, Arm became a leader in mobile phone chips due to its low power consumption, which significantly enhances battery life.
