UK-Based Pension Consultancy Sees Success with Bitcoin

UK-based pension consultancy firm Cartwright has announced that the country’s first Defined Benefit (DB) pension fund achieved a 60% return in one year after allocating 3% of its portfolio to Bitcoin.

Cartwright mentioned that this significant development has piqued the interest of other institutional clients in Bitcoin.

In November 2024, the firm advised an unnamed British pension fund on its Bitcoin investment. Senior investment advisor Arash Nasri expressed that the initial industry response has been “surprisingly positive.”

As a result, Cartwright has published its first “Annual Bitcoin Assessment Report,” aimed at raising Bitcoin awareness among institutional investors.

When questioned about potential future increases in Bitcoin allocation, Nasri remarked: “If Bitcoin continues to deliver the returns we expect, our real question will be ‘when should we reduce it?’”

The consultancy has begun discussions with other clients about similar investments. However, Nasri emphasized that pension funds must fully grasp Bitcoin and approach investments with a long-term perspective.

Cartwright maintains a neutral position in this landscape, with Nasri clarifying, “We are not a firm that manages investments. We are independent advisors equipped with serious knowledge on the potential impacts of Bitcoin on individuals, companies, asset owners, and governments.”

He underlined the responsibility to raise awareness in this arena, while acknowledging the presence of skeptics. Nasri noted that the argument about Bitcoin’s price volatility is often raised but is disappointing. He stated, “Our sector should be experts in portfolio management and position sizing.

“This reluctance to understand a new form of money and technology is very thought-provoking,” he added.
