Gaming Companies Consider Token Launches
Several gaming companies valued over $1 billion are now considering launching tokens, according to Immutable co-founder Robbie Ferguson.
In a Feb. 21 post on X, Ferguson revealed that he has had discussions with multiple gaming firms, including publicly traded companies, which are now open to the idea of launching tokens. Just a year ago, these discussions were not even entertained. Ferguson believes 2025 will compress years of development into a much shorter timeframe, marking a potential shift in the adoption of blockchain gaming assets.
> “I’ve had multiple conversations with >$1B mkt cap (including public) gaming companies in the last month who are now actively considering launching tokens. They would not have even entertained a discussion around them 12 months ago. 2025 is compressing 4 years of dev into 1.”

This development coincides with an increase in on-chain gaming activity. According to DappRadar’s games report released on Feb. 13, over 7 million daily unique active wallets for blockchain gaming were recorded in January 2025, a 386% increase from the previous year.
Despite the current meme coin frenzy, games like Pixels on Ronin (RON) and Off The Grid on Avalanche (AVAX) are setting engagement records, showcasing sustained interest in gaming.
However, web3 gaming investments have stalled, with only $16 million raised in January 2025, a stark decrease from $222 million in December 2024.

The entrance of major game developers into web3 may lead to the development of AAA-caliber blockchain games, essential for broader adoption, according to DappRadar experts. In contrast to the previous “play-to-earn” bubble, which resulted in an oversupplied market, companies now seem interested in long-term token economies with practical in-game applications. New gaming ecosystems are emerging as AI technologies gain ground, with top titles making improvements to gameplay, rewards, and user engagement. Furthermore, the rise in AAA collaborations alongside layer 2 advancements is expected to enhance the maturity of blockchain gaming.
