Honda Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles Due to Steering Issues

By David Shepardson
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Honda is recalling 1.7 million cars and SUVs in the United States due to a problem that can make steering more difficult, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall affects various vehicles from the 2022 to 2025 model years, including some Civic, Civic Type R, CR-V, HR-V, Acura Integra, and Integra Type S. Honda (NYSE:HMC) reported 10,328 warranty claims related to this issue since 2021.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated a probe into the issue in March 2023 and escalated the investigation in November.

NHTSA indicates that the steering gearbox assembly may have been incorrectly manufactured, leading to excessive internal friction that makes steering difficult. Dealers will replace the worn gear spring and add grease where necessary.

Drivers have reported "sticky steering" problems, particularly at highway speeds after prolonged driving. Complaints are mainly related to low mileage vehicles.

NHTSA noted that there were reports of 13 crashes linked to this steering issue, with 11 drivers losing control due to increased steering effort before their vehicles left the roadway.

Honda has not responded to requests for comments.
