Heather Morgan Sentenced for Bitfinex Hack Role
Heather Morgan, also known as the rapper Razzlekhan, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the Bitfinex crypto exchange hack, as reported by Bloomberg. The sentencing occurred on Monday in a Washington, D.C. court.
Morgan's husband, Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein, received a five-year prison sentence for his role last week. He was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Prosecutors indicated that Morgan played a lesser role in the money laundering conspiracy, recommending a shorter sentence than Lichtenstein's. Notably, Morgan was not involved in the original hack, according to Bloomberg.
Lichtenstein and Morgan were accused of laundering bitcoin worth $4 billion at the time of seizure, linked to the 2016 hack of Bitfinex.
Prior to her arrest, Morgan wrote columns providing guidance on protecting businesses from cybercriminals and on socially engineering—termed a hacking technique—"your way into anything."
The government stated that Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly conspired to launder 119,754 bitcoin in August 2016, valued at nearly $71 million at that time. Both pleaded guilty in August 2023.
