Future Forward PAC Partners with Coinbase Commerce for Cryptocurrency Donations
The Future Forward political action committee (PAC) has collaborated with Coinbase Commerce to accept cryptocurrency donations, as confirmed by a Coinbase spokesperson to The Block.
Future Forward is one of the leading Democratic and liberal-leaning PACs, having raised approximately $164 million as of September 4, according to OpenSecrets. Initially supporting President Joe Biden’s reelection bid before he withdrew from the race, it is now funding Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign.
Coinbase Commerce is a payment platform that settles transactions instantly and supports a wide variety of assets. It automatically converts the user’s selected currency into the stablecoin USDC to mitigate volatility, according to its website.
As of September, Coinbase Commerce supports several cryptocurrencies including ApeCoin, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, DAI, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, SHIBA INU, Tether, and USDC, with support for MATIC, USDC, and Wrapped Ether (WETH) on Polygon.
In May, the Trump campaign began using Coinbase Commerce for crypto donations, and reports indicated that the Biden campaign was also considering this option. Today, Fortune reported that Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas mentioned that the Harris campaign would start accepting crypto donations. However, statements from a Future Forward spokesperson suggest that the PAC will accept crypto donations on behalf of Harris rather than her campaign directly, contradicting earlier claims.
Update (Sept. 4, 2024): Adds context about the role the Future Forward PAC will play in accepting crypto donations for the Harris campaign.
