Fortnite Introduces Dill Bits, a Satirical Crypto Coin

Popular battle royale shooter Fortnite has recently added a fake cryptocurrency, titled Dill Bits, as part of its in-game humor, alongside elements poking fun at the industry.

The Introduction of Dill Bits

Dill Bits was introduced in Chapter 6: Season 2 on Friday, allowing players to purchase high-tier loot at three in-game black markets. This addition nods to dark web marketplaces and their links to cryptocurrency. The in-game description of Dill Bits claims it is a “confusing crypto coin you never knew you needed.”

Fortnite also introduced two weapons named Pump and Dump, referencing the common practice around meme coins in the crypto space.

The Real Dill Bits Token

Despite Epic Games’ lack of official involvement, an individual launched a real Dill Bits (DB) token via the Solana launchpad Pump.fun. This unofficial token skyrocketed to a market cap of $4.78 million within hours of launching, attracting meme coin traders eager for quick profits.

A top trader reportedly made over $69,000 from DB token sales after investing about $7,845. However, the token faced a significant downturn, crashing by over 90% to a market cap of just $411,000 as the overall crypto market struggled.

The Meme Coin Landscape

This isn’t the first meme coin tied to Fortnite; Fortnite Token (FNT) was launched in 2022 and labeled a “scam” by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. Despite the initial excitement surrounding Dill Bits, its peak market cap felt modest compared to other tokens. For example, 360noscope420blazeit (MLG) reached a market cap of $238 million before falling below $10 million due to market pressures.

Following the recent crash of the Libra token, distrust in the meme coin space has grown, leading to a slowdown in new token launches.

Market Impact

The larger crypto market, including Solana, Ethereum, and XRP, has also faced declines, further discouraging risk-taking behavior among traders, especially with video game-themed tokens.
