(Reuters) – Sean “Diddy” Combs, the rapper and music mogul known for discovering world-famous artists, went on trial in New York on Monday. He faces charges related to a two-decade racketeering and sex trafficking conspiracy.

WHAT ARE THE CHARGES?

Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty. He faces:
– One count of racketeering conspiracy
– Two counts of sex trafficking by force
– Two counts of transporting for prostitution
All are felonies. If convicted, Combs could face life in prison: up to 25 years for racketeering, 15 to life for sex trafficking, and up to 10 years for transporting for prostitution. Prosecutors must prove all elements of each count beyond a reasonable doubt for conviction, requiring a unanimous juror vote.

WHAT DO THE PROSECUTORS ALLEGE?

Prosecutors from the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office allege that for two decades, Combs used his business empire to lure women with promises of romantic relationships or financial support, then coerced them into drug-fueled sexual performances known as “Freak Offs.” They claim Combs controlled victims through drugging and blackmail. Further accusations include kidnapping at gunpoint, using Molotov cocktails, and physical violence. Authorities also reportedly found assault rifles and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil linked to these performances.

WHAT IS COMBS’ DEFENSE?

Combs’ defense lawyers insist the sexual encounters were consensual and nothing illegal occurred in his “swinger” lifestyle. They plan to discredit the accusers during cross-examination, arguing that financial incentives may have motivated false accusations. They assert that surveillance footage showing Combs in a seemingly violent act was edited to portray him negatively.

WHO IS EXPECTED TO TESTIFY?

Three to four accusers are set to testify, including Combs’ former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura (Cassie). In May 2024, a video was released purportedly showing Combs physically assaulting Ventura in 2016. Other accusers will testify under pseudonyms. It is uncertain if Combs will take the stand, as defense lawyers typically recommend against it to avoid cross-examination.

HOW LONG WILL THE TRIAL LAST?

The trial is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks, which is standard for racketeering cases involving single defendants. Media coverage has intensified due to Combs’ fame.

WHAT OTHER LEGAL TROUBLES DOES COMBS FACE?

In addition to the current trial, Combs faces over 50 civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault and rape, including one from an accuser who claims he was assaulted at the age of 10. Combs has denied all allegations in these civil cases, which seek monetary damages.
