EU Lags in AI Investment

(Reuters) – The European Union lags far behind the United States and China in investing in artificial intelligence, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who spoke on Wednesday.

While Europe has a limited number of AI companies, such as France's Mistral and Germany's Aleph Alpha, it implemented the world's first comprehensive AI regulations that took effect in August.

Huang emphasized the need for the EU to accelerate its AI advancements during his visit to Copenhagen. He noted, "There's an awakening in every country realising that the data is a national resource."

During his trip to Denmark, Huang launched a new supercomputer named Gefion, which features 1,528 graphic processing units (GPUs) and was developed by Nvidia in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation and Denmark's Export and Investment Fund.

Nvidia stands as the top manufacturer of GPUs, which are essential for enhancing AI capabilities. OpenAI's ChatGPT, for instance, was developed using thousands of Nvidia GPUs.

Denmark intends to deploy the supercomputer for drug discovery, disease diagnosis, treatment, and solving complex life science problems.

Huang asserted, "The era of computer-aided drug discovery must be within this decade. This will be the decade of digital biology."

Nvidia ranks as the second largest listed U.S. company after Apple, with a market capitalization of $3.52 trillion.
