Concerns Over Ethereum’s Direction

Ethereum Team Lead Péter Szilágyi has expressed his worries regarding the future of the Ethereum blockchain.

Szilágyi’s concerns center around the Ethereum PeerDAS proposal, which aims to increase the size of Ethereum blobs to 32 MB. He argues that this upgrade would make it difficult for home stakers—individuals with basic computing setups—to participate in the Ethereum network, which contradicts the decentralized nature of the blockchain.

On social media platform X, Szilágyi stated, “Ethereum research is murdering home stakers live in front of everybody. This is not something I signed up for when joining Ethereum.” He expressed a wish to be proven wrong but feels Ethereum is losing its way. He critiqued the research team for adopting a centralized approach, saying, “Which is a cute charade: decentralized validation but centralized control.”

Ethereum blobs allow for short-term storage on the network and were implemented with the EIP-4844 in the Dencun upgrade, which launched in March of this year.

As of July 26 at 2:47 p.m. (18:48 UTC), Ethereum was trading at $3,255, reflecting a 4.11% increase over the previous 24 hours according to The Block Prices.
