Starknet’s First Application-Chain: Nums

Starknet, a layer-2 on top of Ethereum, is launching its first application-chain that settles on the network.

Introducing Nums

The new layer-3 app-chain, Nums, is built using the SN Stack, a customizable toolkit that enables developers to create layer-3 blockchains based on Starknet’s technology.

Nums is an on-chain game where players attempt to sequence a series of 20 generated numbers. Players can earn $NUMS tokens by participating, with the tokens issued via Starknet.

Background on SN Stack

StarkWare, the primary developer firm behind Starknet, announced the development of the SN Stack in July 2023. This announcement followed similar releases from competitors like Arbitrum’s Orbit Stack and Optimism’s OP Stack, both of which launched in 2023. The SN Stack officially went live in January 2023.

Advantages of Starknet’s Technology

Although various layer-2 stacks and games exist on those chains, the Nums team believes that Starknet’s technology allows for more “computationally complex and more ambitious” applications. According to Tarrence van As, CEO of Cartridge (the main firm behind Nums), Starknet makes it easier to create these types of applications compared to Ethereum’s Solidity, which is utilized by most layer-2 solutions.

Cartridge is recognized as one of the key teams developing on Starknet, famous for its Dojo framework, a tool engine that helps developers build games and applications on the network.
