Ethereum Developers Plan Pectra Upgrade in March 2025

Ethereum developers are targeting a mainnet launch of the Pectra upgrade in March 2025, with several milestones preceding this.

Upcoming Milestones

New client releases for the Pectra upgrade and hard forks are expected on the Ethereum test networks, Sepolia and Holesky, by February. This schedule aligns with discussions during a core developer call on Thursday. If the testnet forks proceed as intended, the mainnet rollout will happen the following month.

Initially set for late 2024, the expansion of the upgrade’s scope led to this delay.

Features of the Pectra Upgrade

The Pectra upgrade will introduce multiple Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at enhancing user experience and network efficiency. Key changes include:
Improvements to Crypto Wallets: Enhancing user interface and experience.
Account Abstraction: Streamlining account management.
Validator Stake Limit Increase: Raising the maximum validator stake limit from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH.
Updated Deposit and Exit Mechanisms: Refining processes for staking and unstaking.

To support the Pectra upgrade’s development, developers created short-duration “devnets” for testing components. A temporary Mekong testnet was also launched in November 2024 to test critical upgrades for Pectra.
