Emory University's Bitcoin Investments
Emory University, a private research institution based in Atlanta, disclosed in an Oct. 25 SEC filing that it holds approximately 2.7 million shares of the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust, valued at around $15.1 million.
While some pension funds in Wisconsin and Jersey City reported having crypto-based exchange-traded products (ETFs), Emory stands out as one of the few higher education institutions to own such assets.
The Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (ticker: BTC), approved in July, is an offshoot of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) designed to provide passive exposure to Bitcoin's price. It allows investors to attain more precise exposure to Bitcoin at a lower share price.
In addition to its Bitcoin holdings, Emory reported owning 4,312 shares in Coinbase, valued at $768,269, with Coinbase (ticker: COIN) stock listed at $205.70 as of 5:28 p.m. ET on Friday. Colebase also serves as the custodian for Grayscale's Bitcoin assets.
Emory University's media representatives did not respond immediately to The Block's comment request after business hours.
