Wiley Nickel Advocates for Pro-Crypto Policies

Wiley Nickel, a moderate Democrat and representative for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional district, discussed the need for pro-crypto language in the Democratic Party’s platform at the Bitcoin 2024 conference.

In a letter to party leaders, Nickel and 28 other elected Democrats, including 14 from the U.S. House of Representatives, requested four key actions:

  1. Inclusion of pro-digital asset language in the party platform.
  2. Selection of a Vice Presidential candidate knowledgeable in digital asset policy.
  3. Nomination of a pro-innovation SEC chair.
  4. Meaningful engagement with the crypto industry.

Nickel, alongside moderator Jason Maier, emphasized the importance of a bipartisan approach to crypto issues. He expressed hope for a reset in engagement with the industry, mentioning discussions with the Office of the Vice President.

Regarding Donald Trump’s past comments on Bitcoin, Nickel criticized him for previously labeling cryptocurrencies as scams and claimed that Trump had failed to address the issue during his presidency. Nickel’s comments drew boos from the audience, but Maier reminded attendees that politicians can evolve their views.

Nickel concluded that for the future of crypto in Congress to flourish, a bipartisan approach is essential, warning against politicization that could hinder progress for years to come.
