Crypto Bettors Wager on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Amid Tensions with Trump
Crypto bettors are now placing bets on the future of Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy after a tense meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy was recently dismissed from the White House, where Trump criticized him for being ungrateful.
According to reports from the polygon-based betting platform Polymarket, over $500,000 in bets have been placed on Zelenskyy potentially leaving office before July. The platform estimates a 26% chance of his early departure following the heated negotiations between the two leaders.
Tense Negotiations at the White House
Zelenskyy met with Trump and Vice President JD Vance to discuss the ongoing war with Russia, but the meeting quickly escalated into a disagreement. Trump accused Zelenskyy of being uncooperative and failing to recognize the U.S.’s support. He stated, “You see the hatred he’s got for Putin; that’s very tough for me to make a deal with.”
Trump expressed frustration that Zelenskyy was not prepared to negotiate a minerals deal and warned that without cooperation, the U.S. might withdraw its support. Furthermore, he accused Zelenskyy of using the conflict as leverage, risking a more significant war.
Crypto Community’s Reaction
Crypto bettors are keen on Zelenskyy displaying gratitude towards the U.S., which has been a key supporter of Ukraine during the three-year conflict. Bets on the likelihood of the war concluding in the first three months of Trump’s presidency have exceeded $21 million, with current odds at 23% after the meeting.
Users on the platform urged Zelenskyy to recognize American contributions, with one user commenting, “[Zelenskyy] should’ve thanked the American people; how hard can it be to show some gratitude?”
Polymarket has hosted other similar wagers, revealing insights into public perceptions regarding political events. With Ukraine hinting at a new crypto tax of up to 10% to bolster its economy, U.S. support appears to be diminishing.
