Base Names: Human-Readable Blockchain Addresses
The team behind the Base blockchain, incubated by Coinbase, has launched a new product called Basenames. This tool simplifies alphanumeric blockchain addresses, making them more human-readable. It draws inspiration from the popular Ethereum Name Service (ENS), allowing users to register names similar to .eth
addresses, such as vitalik.eth
or tom.base.eth
.
Base’s Vision
Thomas Vieira, Head of Product at Base, shared at Coinbase’s BaseCamp Summit that “Base Names serves as the connective tissue that enables builders to connect with each other and their communities.” He added, “I may have 10^18 problems, but onchain identity won’t be one.”
User-Friendly Features
Users can connect multiple wallets, including MetaMask, Rainbow, and Coinbase Wallet, to register names. The platform features a webpage for searching other Basename addresses, allowing users to customize their profiles with a bio, social media links, and relevant skills.
Onchain Resumes
Basenames act as an onchain resume where users can showcase their verified talents, such as skills in Solidity programming, marketing expertise, and legal knowledge. “Finding people to build with is one of the main problems we’re trying to solve,” Vieira stated, emphasizing the goal of fostering community connections.
Improved Payment Reliability
Like other onchain naming systems, Basenames will facilitate easier payment transactions and reduce the chances of errors caused by typing wrong addresses. They will resemble ENS addresses but use a Base-specific domain extension, such as base.eth
.
Availability
Initially available to BaseCamp attendees, Basenames will be rolled out to the general public in the coming weeks, according to Vieira.
