Xpeng Unveils Extended-Range Hybrid Technology
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Xpeng (NYSE:XPEV) introduced its extended-range hybrid technology, aiming to increase sales and profitability by offering cost-competitive alternatives to pure EVs.
The “Kunpeng Super Electric System” enables vehicles to drive over 1,400 kilometers using an internal combustion engine to recharge the batteries when needed, as stated by founder He Xiaopeng during a livestream event in Guangzhou.
> “I have noticed that the infrastructure such as power grid in many countries is actually less developed than that in China. We need new types of power charging solutions catering to different market conditions globally. Therefore, we have come up with the extended range hybrid,” said He.
However, the launch date for new models featuring this technology has not been disclosed.
Following Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI), which primarily sells extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), more Chinese automakers are adopting this technology that requires fewer batteries, thereby reducing EV costs.
Nio (NYSE:NIO) is expected to sell its EREV exclusively in foreign markets, including the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, according to a Reuters report earlier this week.
In October, battery manufacturer CATL launched its first battery product designed specifically for extended-range hybrids, aiming to meet the increasing demand from automotive clients and consumers.
Though EREVs face additional tariffs imposed by the European Commission on Chinese-made EVs, they could help reduce per-vehicle costs, as noted by Yale Zhang, managing director at Automotive Foresight. EREVs are more adaptable to regions lacking sufficient EV infrastructure.
> “For example, in Europe, 16 EVs need to share one charging pole, while in China, the ratio is 2.5 to 1,” Zhang added.
In addition to the hybrid technology, Xpeng also showcased other innovations, including a self-developed AI chip, a humanoid robot, and a flying car. The company plans to deliver an updated version of its advanced assisted driving system this month, aiming to enhance the success rates of autonomous lane changes and parking.
