Canadian Stock Market Update

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials, IT, and Clean Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.57%.

Best Performers

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were:
National Bank of Canada (TSX:NA): rose 5.86% or 7.02 points to trade at 126.91 at the close.
Canadian Western Bank (TSX:CWB): added 4.48% or 2.25 points to end at 52.42.
Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY): was up 2.18% or 3.41 points to 159.98 in late trade.

Worst Performers

The worst performers of the session were:
Kinaxis Inc (TSX:KXS): fell 14.54% or 22.79 points to trade at 133.95 at the close.
Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN): declined 5.58% or 1.06 points to end at 17.93.
Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS): down 4.99% or 0.49 points to 9.32.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 598 to 307, while 119 ended unchanged.

Notable Milestones

Shares of National Bank of Canada, Canadian Western Bank, and Royal Bank of Canada reached all-time highs, increasing 5.86%, 4.48%, and 2.18% respectively.

Market Volatility

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.02% to 10.91.

Commodity Prices

  • Gold Futures for December delivery: down 0.47% or 11.95 to $2,540.95 a troy ounce.
  • Crude oil for delivery in October: fell 1.24% or 0.94 to $74.59 a barrel.
  • Brent oil contract for November: down 1.36% or 1.07 to $77.59 a barrel.

Currency Exchange

  • CAD/USD: unchanged 0.27% to 0.74.
  • CAD/EUR: unchanged 0.36% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures: up 0.53% at 100.99.
