Linea Proposes Decentralization Framework

Linea, a Layer 2 ZK Rollup supported by Consensys, unveiled a proposal aimed at decentralization last week.

Proposal Overview

The proposal, "Towards Linea’s Decentralization," presented by Florian Huc, a software architect at Linea, outlines a framework for transitioning the zkEVM to a permissionless system and creating decentralized governance. This involves adjustments to the current block validation, block proposal, and finalization processes.

Goals

The aim is to achieve finality for blocks at both Layer 2 and Layer 1 levels. In this structure, Linea’s sequencers will confirm Layer 2 finality, while Layer 1 ultimate finality will occur once data and proofs from L2 blocks are posted to Ethereum.

Proposed Changes

Linea contributors suggest replacing the current Layer 2 finality mechanism with a proof-of-stake model for block validation. Validators will be required to stake tokens and participate in the QBFT consensus algorithm, where misbehaving validators could face slashing, involving the burning of part of their stake.

Additionally, an on-chain auction system will be established for selecting block proposers, allowing any node to place a bid for the opportunity. The highest bidder gains the right to propose a block, with the bid amount burned to decrease overall token supply.

Recovery Mechanism

A recovery mode will be implemented to ensure that the system remains operational, even if the validator set is inactive for six months. During this period, any node can take over block finalization.

Context

This proposal follows an earlier announcement regarding the intention to decentralize the network after a temporary halt in block production due to a security vulnerability discovered on Velocore, a decentralized exchange operating within its ecosystem.
