PayPal Demonstrates PYUSD for Business Payments

In an effort to showcase the ease of its U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, PayPal completed its first business transaction using its token, PYUSD, as reported by Bloomberg.

The digital payments firm, based in Silicon Valley, paid an invoice to the multinational accounting firm Ernst & Young. According to PayPal’s Director of Market Development, Steve Everett, “Business-to-business payments is ripe for innovation, and digital currencies can provide incredible value in these use cases.” The funds from PayPal were deposited into Ernst & Young’s Coinbase account.

To execute the transaction, PayPal utilized an enterprise-level digital currency hub, although the specific amount paid remains undisclosed.

PYUSD Market Cap Shrinks

Launched over a year ago, PayPal’s USD stablecoin, PYUSD, had a market cap exceeding $1 billion in August but has since decreased to approximately $716 million. This is significantly lower than leading USD-pegged stablecoins like Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC, both of which boast market caps in the tens of billions.

Recently, PayPal has been actively enhancing its digital assets division by announcing various partnerships and initiatives aimed at promoting the use of its PYUSD stablecoin. Last week, for instance, PayPal revealed plans that would allow U.S. business customers to buy, sell, hold, and transfer cryptocurrencies.

Everett highlighted, “Requiring terms like ‘net-30’ for invoice payments can restrict cash flow and negatively impact business operations. With digital currencies like stablecoins, payments can be made 24/7, funds transferred near instantly, and settled in near real time.”
