Jerry Brito Steps Down from Coin Center

Jerry Brito, co-founder of the nonprofit research and advocacy organization Coin Center, will step down at the end of the year.

Coin Center’s Senior Policy Counsel, Robin Weisman, will also be leaving, as stated in a post on Monday. Both Brito and Weisman will continue on the board of directors and provide future advisory support to the team.

Brito expressed pride in the organization’s accomplishments over the last decade, stating, “When we started in 2014, it was not clear that governments would allow Bitcoin to flourish. Bitcoin and crypto are technically unstoppable, yes, but in the short term there was a lot of harm that could have been done and that many tried to do.”

Peter Van Valkenburgh, Research Director, is set to succeed Brito as executive director on January 1, 2025. Furthermore, Landon Zinda will become the policy director, while Antonie Hodge and Neeraj Agrawal will expand their roles in fundraising and management.

Coin Center has tackled multiple issues in Washington, including an ongoing legal dispute with the IRS over a crypto tax reporting requirement for individuals and businesses receiving $10,000 or more in crypto. Additionally, the organization previously sued the U.S. Treasury Department regarding its sanctions on the transaction mixer Tornado Cash, alleging that the Treasury exceeded its statutory authority.
