Macron Addresses Durov’s Arrest
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was not politically motivated, but part of an ongoing judicial investigation.
In a post on X, Macron expressed France’s commitment to “freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship.” He emphasized that in a rule-of-law state, freedoms are maintained within a legal framework to protect citizens and their fundamental rights.
Durov was apprehended at Paris’ Le Bourget airport on Saturday, prompting a statement from the Russian Embassy in France, which accused the French authorities of not cooperating with their attempts to assist Durov.
The United Arab Emirates’ foreign ministry also commented, stating it is “closely following” the case and has requested necessary consular services for Durov from the French government.
On Monday, the Tribunal Judiciaire de Paris announced that Durov was arrested as part of a cybercrime investigation related to accusations of providing “cryptology” services. French prosecutors indicated Durov may be held in police custody until August 28.
Several prominent figures from the crypto industry have called for more clarity regarding Durov’s arrest, including Elon Musk, who urged for more details for the global public.
