Rwanda in Talks with U.S. Over Minerals Deal
KIGALI (Reuters) – Rwanda announced on Wednesday that it is in negotiations with the U.S. regarding a potential minerals deal. This development follows similar discussions between Washington and Rwanda’s neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A spokesperson for the Rwandan government confirmed the talks when asked about a mineral access deal, stating: “Yes, this is part of the discussions that we are having with the U.S.” However, no additional details were provided.
Currently, the U.S. is also engaged in discussions with Congo about a minerals-for-security arrangement. Congo has accused Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s government of supporting the Tutsi-led M23 rebels, who have taken control of a significant portion of the eastern region, notorious for its mineral wealth and ongoing violence.
