China supports Iran in nuclear discussions with the United States and opposes the use of force and “illegal” unilateral sanctions, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks with Iran’s Abbas Araqchi on Wednesday.

Beijing aims to enhance cooperation with Tehran on international and regional issues, Wang stated, according to a ministry release. He praised Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and acknowledged its right to peaceful nuclear energy use.

This meeting precedes U.S.-Iran nuclear talks set for Saturday, following recent U.S. sanctions on Chinese refiners buying Iranian oil. Araqchi updated Wang on the status of indirect U.S.-Iran negotiations and expressed gratitude for China’s supportive position regarding Iran’s nuclear program and sanction relief.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been pursuing a “maximum pressure” strategy on Tehran, aiming to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero. In 2015, Iran curtailed its nuclear program in exchange for sanction relief but saw the U.S. withdraw from the agreement in 2018.

Negotiations between Tehran and Washington resumed earlier this month to place limits on Iran’s nuclear activities. China, the largest purchaser of Iranian oil, continues to support Tehran amid rising U.S. pressure.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on two China-based “teapot” refiners for purchasing Iranian crude. Last month, Chinese imports of Iranian oil reached a record high, as buyers prepared for potential future U.S. sanctions.

Reports indicate China imports around 90% of Iran’s oil exports, and both nations have established a trading system largely based on the Chinese yuan, circumventing the dollar to limit exposure to U.S. financial regulations.

Additionally, Wang and Araqchi discussed tariffs during the meeting, with Wang criticizing the U.S. for its misuse of tariffs that have led to international isolation. He emphasized the need for global unity to uphold multilateralism and maintain the norms of international relations.
