Xiaomi Denies Delay of YU7 Launch
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Xiaomi on Wednesday denied a report regarding the delay of its highly-anticipated YU7 electric SUV, stating it is still set to launch in June or July, as announced by CEO Lei Jun.
Wang Hua, the head of Xiaomi’s public relations department, clarified on his personal Weibo account that the launch date “had not been changed.”
Bloomberg had reported that Xiaomi would not begin selling the YU7 SUV as planned and that a new launch date had not been confirmed.
Last week, Xiaomi disappointed fans and analysts by not showcasing the anticipated YU7 SUV at the Shanghai auto show, which is expected to compete with Tesla’s Model Y.
In contrast to last year’s impressive showing at the Beijing auto show, where Xiaomi debuted the SU7 sedan, the company has opted for a more subdued presence this year, foregoing a press conference and only presenting its SU7 and SU7 Ultra models.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s billionaire founder known for his media presence, did not attend the Shanghai event, attributed to a scheduling conflict. A spokesperson stated, “He still follows the Shanghai auto show and promotes it on his Weibo.”
The company faced scrutiny last month following a fatal accident involving an SU7, which caught fire after striking a roadside pole while the advanced driving assistance system was engaged, resulting in the death of the driver and two passengers.
