Federal Reserve Governor’s Dissent on Interest Rate Cut
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman expressed her dissent regarding the U.S. central bank’s recent half-percentage-point interest rate cut. She preferred a quarter-percentage-point reduction due to ongoing inflation concerns, which remain above the target of 2%. Bowman voiced fears that the larger cut might mislead the public into thinking it was a “premature declaration of victory.”
In her statement released on Friday afternoon, she highlighted the strong job market and economy, but noted that core personal consumption expenditures prices have been increasing at a rate higher than 2.5% over the past year. Core inflation excludes the more volatile food and energy prices, which do not accurately reflect underlying price trends.
Bowman remarked, “We have not yet achieved our inflation goal.” She advocated for a cautious approach towards a neutral policy stance to help ensure continued progress in lowering inflation to the targeted 2%, while also preventing excessive demand stimulation.
