South Korean Man Faces 10-Year Sentence for Attacking Crypto CEO
A South Korean man, identified only as Kang, is facing a potential decade behind bars for attacking Haru Invest CEO Lee Hyung-soo during a court hearing last year.
Prosecutors in Seoul have requested a 10-year prison sentence for Kang, a man in his 50s, who stabbed Lee during a court appearance.
Haru Invest halted withdrawals in 2023 citing partner issues before its executives were arrested in 2024 for allegedly stealing $828 million in customer funds.
Kang’s defense argues he had no intent to kill, claiming he acted in a moment of extreme emotional distress after losing 100 BTC, valued at $8.3 million, due to Haru Invest’s collapse.
His lawyers are seeking a reduced charge of aggravated assault instead of attempted murder, highlighting his financial and psychological struggles.
Ahead of the hearing, the Haru Invest Victims’ Association held a press conference advocating for Kang’s release, arguing that fraud victims like him are unfairly treated while executives accused of embezzlement remain free on bail.
Kang is scheduled to return to court on April 4 for sentencing.
