House Republicans Spending Bill
House Republicans have introduced a spending bill aimed at funding government agencies through Sept. 30, creating a high-stakes power struggle in Congress.
This move compels Democrats to either support the bill or face a potential government shutdown on March 15.
The legislation, which has President Donald Trump‘s backing, is anticipated to encounter significant opposition from Democrats. House Speaker Mike Johnson will work to gather his party’s narrow majority to pass the 99-page bill on Tuesday, likely without Democratic backing. However, its fate in the Senate is uncertain, needing moderate Democrat support to achieve the 60-vote threshold required.
Both parties have indicated they do not want a government shutdown. Should the bill fail, lawmakers may need to pursue temporary measures to extend funding while negotiations progress since the fiscal year commenced in October.
Trump urges Republican representatives to back the measure without dissent, claiming it is essential for stabilizing the country’s finances. On Truth Social, Trump stated, “I ask you to give us a few months, until September, so we can continue to get the nation’s ‘fiscal house’ in order.”
Drafted in collaboration with the White House, the interim bill would enable the administration to persist in cost-cutting strategies under Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Democrats have sought to limit Musk’s budget authority, while Republicans oppose these constraints.
The bill suggests modest cuts to discretionary spending until the fiscal year concludes, which Trump believes will pave the way for ambitious fiscal strategies, including $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade.
