Future Forward PAC Partners with Coinbase Commerce for Crypto Donations
The Future Forward political action committee (PAC) has partnered with Coinbase Commerce to accept cryptocurrency donations, according to a Coinbase spokesperson speaking to The Block.
Future Forward is one of the top Democratic and liberal-leaning PACs, having raised approximately $164 million as of September 4, as reported by OpenSecrets. Originally supporting President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, the PAC is now backing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Coinbase Commerce is a payment platform that provides instant transaction settlements and supports a wide array of assets. It automatically converts the user’s chosen currency into the stablecoin USDC to mitigate volatility, as stated on its website.
As of September, Coinbase Commerce accepts various cryptocurrencies, including ApeCoin, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, DAI, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, SHIBA INU, Tether, and USDC. It also supports MATIC, USDC, and Wrapped Ether (WETH) on Polygon.
In May, the Trump campaign began using Coinbase Commerce for crypto donations, while the Biden campaign was reportedly in discussions about adopting the platform as well. Fortune recently reported that Coinbase’s Chief Financial Officer, Alesia Haas, stated that the Harris campaign would start accepting crypto donations. However, comments from a Future Forward spokesperson suggest that the PAC is indirectly receiving crypto contributions on behalf of Harris, contradicting earlier reports.
Update (Sept. 4, 2024): This update adds context about the role of the Future Forward PAC in accepting crypto donations for the Harris campaign.
