Boeing Layoffs in Washington

(Reuters) – U.S. planemaker Boeing (NYSE:BA) is letting go of 396 employees at various locations in Washington, according to a notice from the state's Employment Security Department.

This notice, released on Monday, is part of a larger layoff plan announced in October, which is expected to affect a total of 17,000 Boeing jobs, roughly 10% of the company’s global workforce. This will occur either through layoffs or by not filling vacant positions.

Boeing aims to resume production of its best-selling 737 MAX after a weeks-long strike by over 33,000 West Coast workers disrupted most of its commercial jet outputs.

When asked for comments, Boeing referred to prior statements indicating the company is adjusting workforce levels to align with its financial reality and focus on a more prioritized set of objectives.

In November, Boeing completed a $24.3 billion equity offering to strengthen its finances and maintain its investment-grade credit rating.

An earlier notice in November indicated the company planned to lay off more than 2,500 workers across Washington, Oregon, South Carolina, and Missouri. With over 60,000 employees, Washington state has faced the brunt of the layoffs, as it houses most of Boeing's commercial jet production.
