Investigation of Gold Mine Incident in Guerrero
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican authorities will investigate an incident at a gold mine in the Pacific coastal state of Guerrero, which killed three workers, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday.
Canadian company Torex Gold, which operates the mine, reported on Thursday that two employees and a contractor were killed after being exposed to carbon monoxide gas. Another contractor was also exposed and hospitalized. Torex has paused operations following the incident.
During a press conference, Sheinbaum stated that the labor ministry and civil protection authorities are reviewing the case and will cooperate with the victims' families. She requested Labor Minister Marath Bolanos to increase inspections of mines.
Sheinbaum emphasized, "Because it can't be that some standards are applied by Canadian companies here (in Mexico) and others (by Canadian companies) in Canada."
According to the Canadian Trade Commissioner, Canadian miners hold $6.29 billion in assets in Mexico.
