EU says Booking must now comply with Digital Markets Act

AMSTERDAM (Reuters)

The European Commission announced that hotel reservation website Booking.com must comply with strict EU obligations after being designated a "gatekeeper" under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in May.

The DMA is a stringent regulation targeting market dominance among tech giants, imposing tougher obligations to moderate content, ensure fair competition, and facilitate easier consumer transitions between services.

Companies designated as gatekeepers have over 45 million monthly active users and €75 billion ($79 billion) in market capitalisation, providing core platform services for business users.

Non-compliance with the DMA can lead to fines up to 10% of a company's global turnover, and up to 20% for repeated violations. The Commission can also restrict takeover activities.
