Meta Platforms Collaborates with Reuters for AI Integration
(Reuters) – Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) announced on Friday that its AI chatbot will utilize Reuters content to provide real-time answers regarding news and current events. This marks the latest collaboration between a prominent technology company and a news publisher.
Neither Meta nor its parent company, Thomson Reuters (NYSE:TRI), disclosed any financial terms related to the partnership. This arrangement is Meta's first news deal in years, occurring amidst ongoing reductions of news content from their platforms following backlash from regulators and publishers over misinformation and revenue-sharing disagreements.
Meta AI, the company's chatbot, is integrated across its services, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. However, no information was provided regarding whether Reuters content will be used to train its large-language model.
"We can confirm that Reuters has partnered with tech providers to license our trusted, fact-based news content to power their AI platforms. The terms of these deals remain confidential," stated a Reuters spokesperson.
According to a report from Axios, Reuters will receive compensation for granting access to its journalism through a multi-year agreement.
Through this collaboration, "Meta AI can respond to news-related questions with summaries and links to Reuters content," a Meta spokesperson conveyed in an email statement.
Other firms, like ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and Jeff Bezos-backed startup Perplexity, have also established AI partnerships with various news organizations.
Additionally, Reuters has maintained a fact-checking partnership with Meta since 2020.
